Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Dallas

An undesirable abdominal shape, such as a “pot belly” or “pooch,” often results from the overstretching of skin and muscle and from fat deposits. Stretched tissue and stubborn fat may not respond to diet and exercise, and a belly paunch can make you feel self-conscious. For a solution, many patients seek out Dr. Steve Byrd for a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. A tummy tuck repairs abdominal skin and muscle that have been stretched, usually due to pregnancy or weight gain. The treatment restores the abdomen to a flatter, slimmer profile with scars hidden beneath the bikini line.

Dr. Byrd’s Approach

Although many methods for abdominoplasty exist, Dr. Byrd typically uses 4 techniques:

Full Tummy Tuck

Full abdominoplasty corrects all 3 facets of a poor abdominal contour: skin, muscle, and fat. From above the umbilicus (belly button) down to the pubic bone, excess skin is removed, and the belly button is returned to its normal position. The abdominal muscles are drawn together, and excess fat is removed from the upper abdomen and flanks (or love handles). With all of these factors addressed, the abdomen ends up with a flat, pleasing contour.

Belt Lipectomy

Sometimes excess fat and skin affect more than the abdomen, such as the waist, hips, lower back, buttocks, and thighs, but liposuction alone cannot correct skin laxity. In those cases, a belt (circumferential) lipectomy, sometimes called a “body lift,” can restore a slenderer midsection. This procedure also lifts the skin of the outer thigh and buttocks.

Mini Tummy Tuck

If redundant skin and fat is isolated to the lower abdomen, a mini tuck (mini abdominoplasty) is usually sufficient to restore a slim profile. This approach involves the area between the umbilicus and pubic bone, eliminating the scar around the belly button. It includes limited liposuction to remove excess fat, removal of excess skin, and tightening of the muscles.

Muscles Addressed Sternum to pubis Below umbilicus Upper buttocks and hips, sternum to pubis

Umbilical Float

In cases where the patient’s belly button sits high on the tummy and there is not enough loose skin in the upper abdomen, but there’s more excess skin than a mini tummy tuck can correct, the solution is an umbilical float. In this procedure, the umbilicus is detached from the abdominal wall. If necessary, the muscles are tightened. Then the abdominal skin is pulled down and the belly button reattached. The belly button is in a more natural-looking position, and the abdomen is flatter and firmer.

Are You A Candidate?

An ideal candidate for tummy tuck is a man or woman who is self-conscious about a bulging, flabby abdomen that does not improve with diet or exercise. You should be close to your target weight and be in good overall health and physical shape. With age comes lost skin elasticity. Mature patients who have experienced this age-related skin laxity can likely expect terrific results from a tummy tuck. Female patients may also benefit from combining their tummy tuck with breast augmentation or breast lift surgery.
