One of the keys to feeling comfortable and confident going into surgery is to know what to expect. Dr. Steve Byrd is unique among plastic surgeons in Dallas in that he uses education as a tool for preparing patients for rhinoplasty and other plastic surgery procedures. His staff is also available and prepared to answer any questions that might arise before and after patients go to surgery.

The most surprising and maybe most important thing for patients to know is that it takes a full 12 months for the nose to reach it’s permanent shape. It takes a very long time for the swelling to dissipate and the soft tissue and cartilage to totally heal. Healing comes in stages and the majority of healing is done much earlier than the 12 month guideline. By the end of the healing year, the changes will be almost imperceptible, but they’re essential for the body to stabilize. Immediate Post-Operative Instructions

Like all plastic surgery post-op patients, you’ll need to keep your heart rate and blood pressure down for a full 3 weeks following your “nose job” in Dallas / Fort Worth. That means no going to the gym and no running. You can walk as long as you don’t break a sweat doing it. There is a reason for this restriction: one of your greatest enemies after this type of surgery is swelling. Dr. Byrd has painstakingly tightened and pulled things into perfect alignment. Working out and raising your blood pressure and heart rate causes muscles to swell effecting the surrounding soft tissues and ligaments. In essence the swelling un-does some of the corrections achieved through surgery.

  • Keep activity to a minimum the first few days after your “nose job.”
  • For the first full week sleep on two pillows to keep your head elevated at all times.
  • Do not bend over or allow your head to fall below the level of your heart for the first full week.
  • Any packing and stents will be removed by Dr. Byrd or Lisa, his nurse, within the first week after surgery. Stefanie, Dr. Byrd’s Consultation Coordinator, will schedule this with you.
  • Attend your doctor’s appointment 5 to 7 days after surgery to have the splint removed.
  • Allow any drainage to be absorbed by the packing. Do NOT blow your nose for 3 weeks.
  • You can wear your splint in the shower as long as water does not hit the splint directly.
  • Do NOT put anything up your nose! There are stitches in the nose that should not be disturbed.

Each person has their own way of healing. Some patients will only have minor bruising that dissipates within a few days, while others may have fairly dark bruising that may require makeup to cover it up for 2 weeks and sometimes more.

You may notice that your nose just “feels different.” Some patients explain this as numbness or that their nose feels like rubber. It just takes awhile for you and your body to adjust to the changes done in surgery. The foreign feeling won’t last forever and before too long you’ll notice that the strange feeling is just not there anymore.

Just like every person is unique, so is every recovery. If you have any questions or concerns especially during those first 2 to 3 weeks after your Dallas rhinoplasty when things are changing and healing at such a rapid rate, please don’t hesitate to call our office. Lisa, Dr. Byrd’s nurse, will give you a phone number to use to contact her if you have questions before the office phones are turned on at 8:30, after they’re turned off at 5:00 or on the weekends. Lisa is a great contact resource and advocate. If it’s the normal small concern you’ll get it off your mind and be able to rest better, and on those rare instances when you might need to be seen fairly quickly, it’s much faster to go through Lisa than to try to go through Doctor On Call channels.

We look forward to helping you enhance your facial appearance. Save $100 on your consultation with Dr. Byrd when you request an appointment online or call our office at (214) 821-9662.
